“As a long-time supporter of the GLBT community, we talked about the potential repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Actually, what’s to support about the GLBT community? That’s like saying I support breathing. It’s essential. I don’t care if you’re polka dotted and wear a purple tutu – if you add to my life and the community around us, you’re essential. Sexual orientation is a component of identification, not the sole means. When we live in a world that sees people as…people…instead of targets, we’ll be well on the road to working on the things that truly make our lives better.”—

I’m nervous that it’s all talk until the Dept. of Health & Human Services actually makes anything legal, but the idea is right. - Paul
Way back here, I talked about Ginger and I setting up our Health Care Power of Attorney. Though it’s been a long time coming, I’m glad Obama has finally mandated that hospitals can not discriminate on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation in terms of patient visitation rights. However, he also made it clear that health care power of attorneys are the best way to ensure that, as a patient, your intentions to have your partner visit you in the hospital are recognized. So, yay, for a step in the right direction! And, thank goodness someone FINALLY apologized to the queer family whose rights were violated by a Florida hospital. Even if you live in a state that will recognize your marriage, don’t forget the importance of a health care power of attorney for travel purposes. I keep my health care directive info on a credit card sized card in my wallet thanks to Legal Zoom. It makes me feel a little more comfortable when we head to Utah to ski and ride backcountry, trees, and double black terrain (What can I say? We are risk takers on the slopes, but we do wear helmets). At least if something happens, I know Ginger will be my bedside. Have you done your Health Care Power of Attorney yet?
